In a court hearing held in Ipata, Ilorin, Kwara State, a woman named Taibat Abubakar expressed her perplexity about becoming pregnant despite not engaging in sexual intercourse with her husband, Mr. Abubakar Salihu. Taibat explained that her husband had proposed marriage to her, but she declined due to her lack of love for him. However, he insisted and asserted that she had no choice but to accept his proposal.
Taibat narrated, "Suddenly, he contacted me one day and informed me that I was pregnant with his child, emphasizing that I should not terminate the pregnancy. Although I was surprised, I didn't take it seriously until my menstrual cycle didn't arrive at the end of the month, despite not having had sexual relations with him."
She further mentioned, "He paid my dowry, and I have already given birth to our child. However, I no longer have feelings of love for him."
In her plea to the court, Taibat requested the dissolution of the marriage. She also sought a monthly sum of N10,000 for the child's upkeep and requested that the court order her estranged husband to cover the child's educational expenses.
In response, Salihu refuted Taibat's claims, stating that she initially rejected his advances but eventually became agreeable to their relationship. He clarified, "Our physical intimacy was a conscious act and did not occur in a dream or spiritual realm, as she has alleged."
The Magistrate, Ajibade Lawal, instructed the couple to maintain the existing situation until the next adjourned date of July 25th.
